How does someone get a Commercial Driver License?Since February 7, 2022, Entry-level drivers are subject to the requirements in the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations. This applies to drivers seeking to: Obtain a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time. Upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL. Obtain a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time.

Is there really a shortage of Commercial truck drivers?The American Trucking Associations estimates that in 2021 the truck driver shortage hit a historic high of just over 80,000 drivers. This figure is the difference between the number of drivers currently in the market and the optimal number of drivers based on freight demand. At current trends, the shortage could surpass 160,000 in 2030. This forecast is based on driver demographic trends, including gender and age, as well as expected freight growth.

Is Heavy Equipment Operator Certification required?No national or industry standard for a heavy equipment operator license exists. The term “heavy equipment operator license” is often used interchangeably with “heavy equipment operator certification”. In most cases, an operator is considered qualified if he/she can demonstrate competency of the equipment operation and an understanding of safe operation. Some companies require additional safety training as a requirement to promote safe job sites.

Does my company need a full DOT program, even for only one commercial vehicle?If your company operates CMV’s and is registered with the FMCSA and has a USDOT number you are required to follow the regulations fully and are subject to audit, investigation, and compliance reviews. Failure to maintain a proper DOT Program can result in thee suspension or revocation of the companies authority to operate legally.

Can the company be fined for not complying with DOT regulations?If there is a breach of DOT compliance, the result may be written warnings, stiff fines and penalties, suspension of a company’s ability to operate and even jail time-depending on the severity of the violation(s). Fines can be assessed per violation making non-compliance extremely costly.
